Hosted by acclaimed anthropologist Dr. Adam Gamwell, the course consists of six video modules based around areas of impact. Each video contains interviews with luminary anthropologists who have excelled in these areas. Interviews are interspersed with Adam offering overviews and insights on the key lessons from each luminary and broader communications. Each module also has accompanying exercises, designed to be completed on your own time and to enable you to start integrating course insights into practice.

A longstanding issue for anthropology has been its public visibility. The effects in the US, UK, and elsewhere range from tenuous assumptions about the discipline to calls for defunding departments to outright department closures and consolidations. Anthropologists, and graduate students in the field are often the first among the social and behavioral sciences to be interviewed by journalists when crises, holidays, new movies and books are released.

Many anthropologists have been asking: "But where are the anthropologists?"

THE SOLUTION

Anthropologist on the Public Stage

Fortunately there has been a growing trend in anthropology toward a greater public presence, accelerated by COVID-19. We built on this trend by developing a web-based, modular training program to chronicle and create more anthropologists to enter the public sphere. To us, this was less the stuff of a traditional textbook introduction to anthropology, more a practical, hands-on guide toward engaging a broader public in our position anthropology is there in the public forum. The Werner-Gren Foundation, through its Global Initiatives Grant, conceived and funded the Hotspot Credo of our work over the last two years on anthropology. These six modules each have a theme related to building a public presence, and incorporate inspiring them to enter the public sphere. An array of actions is open to anthropologists: often in employees, with their shared symbolic, professional, or student rank. This course emphasizes honing skills to go from interested observer to confident participant in disseminating work and confidence out in a public world.
